Earth might be facing challenges, but a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor originating at the interdisciplinary festival Starmus seeks to encourage individuals to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor in honour of the esteemed British primatologist who passed away recently. It seeks to acknowledge those who champion our planet's biodiversity.

The Medal's Framework

The inaugural winners are expected to be announced at the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, which will run from 17–22 October the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had supported the medal's establishment. “The vision of having this award, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. And I think because of the close bond she had with us.”

“This medal aims to highlight sustainable programmes carried out to make our world improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support to carry on such efforts,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – will likely have multiple categories.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking award for science communication that we created a decade past,” he explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that award.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, a prominent voice remarked, “To be truthful, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Certain policies in one major nation represents an assault on knowledge. This situation undermines global initiatives.”

“To be honest, the prospects aren't particularly bright therefore we must commence reconsidering, more deeply regarding the impact of our actions. This concern encompasses not just climate change, that’s the whole way in which we interact with our environment.”

A Call to Action

Consequently, it was noted this is a good time to follow her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – that was her foremost concern, to change the way we treat fellow creatures with which we share the planet.”

A major topic at present was highlighted of disinformation. The theme of next year’s festival will be “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that truth has become a matter of debate where political interests are involved. This is a perilous development,” he commented. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The aspiration remains that the medal will inspire positive change. “The purpose is motivating others to participate and to show concern and to work toward these goals, truly. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we must look at working our utmost,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, but you still have to work toward success.”

A family member involved in environmental protection shared confidence that “given direction and once enabled, humans can be conscientious guardians of Earth”, pointing to the programs of an institute which, among its other activities, empowers the youth become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother often reminded us, the choices we make each day are significant and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we choose to create,” he said. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will offer support and increase understanding regarding the positive actions that are being undertaken.”
