Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
